“Don’t Be Stupid:

A Green Beret’s Guide to Investing”

I am excite to announce that my new book, “Don’t Be Stupid: A Green Beret’s Guide to Investing” is now available on Amazon.

Proceeds donated to the Green Beret Foundation.

Why I wrote this book:

Working at hedge funds for over two decades, I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly in terms of portfolio managers (“PMs”). And over that time, I jotted down notes from the PMs that I worked for, been mentored by, and learned from. These “lessons learned” became my investment rules which have helped me become a successful investor while avoiding the major pitfalls that so many talented PMs succumb to. Each of my 11 investing rules became a chapter in my book.

Topics include:

  1. The importance of understanding drawdown math.

  2. The three most important questions every investor should ask him/herself before committing capital.

  3. Understanding the macro environment and where we are in the business cycle.

  4. Investing in mega trends.

  5. Strategic asset allocation.

  6. How to develop mental toughness to navigate market volatility.

  7. Understanding that ego is the enemy. Don’t be stupid.

The goal:

My goal for the book is to try to condense 21 years of pain into 288 pages of learning. And, hopefully, the reader can walk away with an understanding of some simple concepts that may help them on their journey to become a better investor.

Reviews:

Don’t Be Stupid is a blunt force instrument against bad investing habits by rookies and experts alike. If you care about protecting your capital — and your sanity — buy and read this book now.”

  • David McCormick - U.S. Senator, State of Pennsylvania and former CEO, Bridgewater Associates

“I just finished Don't Be Stupid and I think it's quite a worthwhile contribution to investment literature. Markets change all the time and are famously difficult to understand. Establishing objective and maybe somewhat arbitrary guidelines will greatly increase an investor's chances of success. Anything that can reduce the emotional component is a help.”

  • Steve Mathews

“The author's depth of experience —both in the military and in the markets— provides valuable insights and a multitude of real world examples to illustrate the principles being presented. He is thorough in his presentation of his approach to investing; anyone who wants to be a serious investor will find the tools they need to succeed in this book. I can’t think of anyone —even seasoned investment professionals— who wouldn’t learn something from reading this.”

  • Debra Morrow

“I bought this on a whim and was surprised by how professional and useful the information was.”

  • T. Nickle

“Practical advice borne of real world challenges and lessons learned. I loved the straight ‘real’ talk and the transparency of him having both won and lost in a fickle marketplace.”
